Phacoemulsification

The Phacoemulsification probe is inserted through the incision and into the eye and the computer-controlled phacoemulsification machine then directs fluid into  eye at the same rate that it is removed.

This machine then uses high frequency ultrasound to dissolve the len which is then aspirated, or sucked, out of the eye. Next, transverse grooves are cut into the lens. These four grooves are then cracked into pieces to be sucked through the opening in the capsule.

Once the hard nucleus is removed, the soft lens cortex is aspirated out of the eye to leave the lens capsule clean and minimise the chance of a secondary cataract developing.
